Emmen defeated Vitesse Arnhem 2-1 in Sunday’s early Eredivisie clash.

With PSV Eindhoven dropping points on Saturday, Vitesse had the chance to take third spot with a victory

However, Emmen are a formidable opponent at home and in the 11th minute, Michael de Leeuw tapped in a Glenn Bijl cross to make it 1-0.

Ten minutes later, Remko Pasveer and the crossbar denied De Leeuw’s header but Nikolai Laursen was on hand to score the rebound.

Vitesse pulled one back in the 33rd minute when Bryan Linssen hit the post and Nouha Dicko netted the rebound.

Vitesse tried to find an equaliser in the second half but Emmen held on to claim a victory which moves them 13th, while Vitesse drop to fifth.

Sierhuis fires Groningen to win over Willem II

Kaj Sierhuis netted a double as Groningen defeated Willem II 2-0 in the Euroborg.

Willem II headed to Groningen in sixth spot and in good form but the home side were the better team from the start and deservedly took the lead in the 40th minute.

After good work by Django Warmerdam, Kaj Sierhuis worked the ball past Timo Wellenreuther.

Two minutes into the second half, Sierhuis doubled Groningen’s lead after racing onto Joel Osoro’s header before hammering a shot into the net.

Sierhuis was then substituted to a standing ovation on 63 minutes as Groningen comfortably saw out the remaining half-an-hour.

AZ ease to win over 10-man FC Twente

AZ Alkmaar remain six points behind Ajax in second after a comfortable 3-0 victory over ten-man FC Twente.

This week, Calvin Stengs was named in the provisional Netherlands squad and he was aiming to impress on Saturday evening in order to remain in Ronald Koeman’s plans.

The Oranje boss will have been impressed with the winger’s through ball on 18 minutes which set Myron Boadu through on goal. The striker was taken down just outside the box by Twente goalkeeper Joel Drommel, which earned him a straight red card.

From that point AZ Alkmaar laid siege to the Twente goal but the woodwork prevented Owen Wijndal on two occasions. Eventually on the stroke of half time, Pantelis Hatzidiakos made it 1-0 with an excellent strike into the top corner.

Ten minutes into the second half, Dani de Wit doubled the hosts lead from close range.

Boadu then sealed the comfortable victory in the 78th minute with a clipped finish over substitute keeper Jorn Brondeel.

AZ Alkmaar move two points clear of PSV Eindhoven and are currently the main challenger to Ajax. FC Twente remain in 10th.
