Utrecht have their first league win under Michael Silberbauer after an early strike saw them defeat Excelsior 1-0.

Utrecht only needed six minutes to take the lead with a through ball by Can Bozdogan setting up Tasos Douvikas to fire past Stijn van Gassel.

The hosts had the ball in the net again before the break but Douvikas saw his effort ruled out. After the break, Douvikas hit the crossbar with a header as Utrecht searched for a second goal.

Van Gassel kept his side in the game but Excelsior never really threatened and equaliser and the hosts held on for a slender win.

Utrecht is 7th while Excelsior are in 13th.
