Friday, 7th April

FC Groningen v FC Utrecht

Having lost their last four, and with only one win since October, Groningen missed their chances against beatable opposition to get out of relegation trouble. Now they are seven points from safety with seven games to go. It doesn’t look possible, for me.

Utrecht are guilty of occasionally dropping a terrible performance, but they have much the better players. I couldn’t believe they drew 0-0 with Volendam last time out, having had three goals ruled out by VAR. I think they will win here to get back on track.

1-2

Saturday, 8th April

Vitesse Arnhem v Go Ahead Eagles

Vitesse seemed to be on the way to Eredivisie safety when Phillip Cocu joined the club. No win in the last seven however has come at the wrong time, and they know find themselves back in amongst the scrap.

That will add pressure to this game, at home against a side they should be beating, except, I find Go Ahead quite a useful side, and it is therefore a little frustrating that they are inconsistent at times. That’s what makes this one tricky to predict, but I will back Vitesse to get their three points.

1-0

PSV v Excelsior

Despite what looks like a lack of ambition from PSV which could be about to drive away Xavi Simons from the club this summer, I think Ruud van Nistelrooy and co can sense an opportunity to finish second over Ajax — giving them Champions League play-offs qualification for next season.

A 4-1 win over Cambuur aside, Excelsior have really struggled to score goals in 2023. That said, I think that could be the least of their concerns on Saturday!

4-0

AZ Alkmaar v Sparta Rotterdam

AZ were frustrated to have dropped points last time out with a draw against Heerenveen. Now with another home match but against tougher opposition, I think it will suit them a little better, with the Rotterdam side more willing to come out and attack, leaving space for AZ’s pacy players.

Tobias Lauritsen’s height against AZ’s not-so-strong centre-backs will be a complete mismatch, though I think AZ will simply score more.

2-1

Heerenveen v FC Volendam

Heerenveen have scored in each of their last eight Eredivisie games. Their form is still mixed, but Sydney van Hooijdonk’s goals are helping his side stay in the hunt for the European play-offs. I think they will get the better of Volendam.

2-0

Sunday, 9th April

FC Twente v Cambuur

Twente’s imperious home form will see them comfortably get the better of lowly Cambuur on Sunday lunch time. Sometimes these early games can take a while to get going, but surely the home side will put on the pressure and force more defensive errors from their visitors.

3-0

FC Emmen v NEC Nijmegen

Emmen’s two wins in the past three games could be absolutely crucial to help them avoid automatic relegation. With a seven-point cushion to that drop zone, they may be more worried now about staying in the final relegation play-off place, with five of their last seven matches against teams in the top seven.

I thought NEC would give PSV more of a tough game last weekend, but my opinion doesn’t change on a side full of talent. It is a difficult game to call with Emmen so desperate for points.

2-2

Ajax v Fortuna Sittard

After losing to Feyenoord a few weeks back, Ajax didn’t have more dropped points in mind when they drew a blank against Go Ahead Eagles last weekend. It is hard to say another team will take points off the Amsterdam side, but you have to say they were quite disappointing considering they were so keen in the media on winning all of their final games.

2-0

Feyenoord v RKC Waalwijk

With an eight-point cushion at the top, Feyenoord have a comfortable lead and run-in of games. In De Kuip, I think they will OK handling RKC, who are undeniably a tricky side to face in the Eredivisie under the tutelage of Joseph Oosting. A narrow win may be the order of the day after De Klassieker in the week and European games to come.
