The 49-year-old signed a three-year deal as head coach of Ajax in the summer after departing Sparta Rotterdam, but he departs after less than four months.
Ajax is currently second bottom in the Eredivisie after they lost 4-3 against FC Utrecht on Sunday and it is officially the worst start that the club has ever made to a league campaign.
After meetings on Monday, Steijn’s departure was confirmed and interim director of general affairs Jan van Halst told the club website, “We have worked together very intensively and professionally in recent months, but the sporting results and the development of the team lagged behind.
“That’s why we sat around the table again today. Maurice himself has now also indicated that he has doubts as to whether he is still the right man in the right place. Together we then came to the conclusion that it is better to separate.”
Hedwiges Maduro will take charge of Ajax for their Europa League clash with Brighton and Hove Albion on Thursday.
