The Red Devils are eyeing a new defensive midfielder in the current transfer window and Fofana has recently emerged as an option.

It is now reported that the Frenchman has already turned down the Hammers while AC Milan have yet to meet the £30m asking price.

This has put United in pole position to sign the midfielder. The club have yet to make an approach, but Fofana is unlikely to snub them.

The 25-year-old believes United have an ambitious project similar to Milan and won't say no to them if a formal approach is made.

United were initially keen on signing PSG's Manuel Ugarte , but that is no longer an option to the huge £52m asking price.

Fofana does not have the strong passing skills of Ugarte, but he would be a quality signing as he is good on the defensive front.
