Owls chiefs claim they were still negotiating compensation with the Premier League side.

But it is understood that Bruce had already told the Championship outfit he wanted to join his home-town club.

Toon bigwigs indicated they would be willing to pay Bruce’s release clause.

Even so, Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri still refused to accept his exit, so talks became increasingly difficult.

The Owls also demanded Newcastle players Achraf Lazaar and Rolando Aarons returned as part of the deal after successful loan stints last season under Bruce.

Newcastle rejected this, so Owls refused to accept their manager’s departure.

Toon sources refute any wrong-doing and strongly deny Wednesday’s claim that the first they knew about his exit was when the Magpies released a statement on his arrival.

Newcastle star Jonjo Shelvey insists Bruce is the right man for the job.

He said: “You won’t find many people who don’t speak highly of Steve.”
