The Frenchman has developed into one of the best defensive midfielders in Ligue 1 and he is now a regular with the national team too.

United have been one of his main admirers. They failed to sign him on an initial loan last summer but are prepared to try again this winter.

The club are currently contemplating over the departure of Casemiro. He could be the subject of interest from several Saudi teams.

If he were to leave in January, United could immediately turn their attention to landing Fofana whom they have been scouting very closely.

They recently watched him in action for France against Greece. He scored one of the goals and was terrific with his ball control.

Monaco are unlikely to demand a high fee for Fofana whose deal expires in June 2025. He could leave for around €30m in January.
