Man Utd left-back set to join Benfica permanently
Manchester United left-back Alvaro Fernandez is set to join Benfica on a permanent basis, according to O Jogo.
The Spaniard was loaned out to the Primeira Liga giants at the start of the year. Benfica agreed to sign him with a buy option worth €6m.
The club have now decided to trigger the clause on his loan contract. The 22-year-old will sign a five-year deal in the next few days.
Fernandez never got his chance to impress for the Red Devils and he will be hoping to make a big impact with Roger Schmidt 's side.
United will have the opportunity to re-sign him in the future. There is a buy-back clause which will become active from next year.
Aside from this, the Red Devils also have a sell-on clause as part of the deal while there is a first refusal option at their disposal too.
Hence, all is not lost with Fernandez's exit. They have the chance to bring him back if he manages to realise his full potential at Benfica.
