MANCHESTER UNITED are confident a compromise can be reached with Leicester in their pursuit of Harry Maguire.

But they have dropped their interest in Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff after being quoted £50million for him.

Man Utd are confident of reaching a £75m compromise with Leicester for Harry Maguire

The Red Devils had a £70m bid — including add-ons — rejected for Maguire before they left to tour   Australia at the weekend.

The Foxes want £90m for the England  centre-back — but there is hope a deal can still be done.

United will make a further bid before the transfer window closes, with their  valuation ahead of Manchester City, who consider him worth around £65m.

Maguire would become the world’s most  expensive defender, beating Virgil van Dijk’s £75m fee when he moved from Southampton to Liverpool.

But United have been put off midfielder Longstaff.

Newcastle want £50m for a player who has only nine Premier League appearances to his name for them.

United will pay £20m and thought a deal would be done.

But they were left stunned when given the valuation  and will now look elsewhere.

Longstaff, 21, was  also left shocked by the figure, which  effectively prices him out of a dream move to Old Trafford.

There are no other clubs in for him and Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will not  overpay for players.

He said: “We’re still in the market looking to do some business but we’re patient, we’re Manchester United, we don’t have to sell or overpay.

“You have to have the right players at the right price. If you look at the squad we’ve got there are  many good players.”

United  yesterday told Inter Milan they have to find £75m or forget signing Romelu Lukaku.

Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio has held talks with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

The Italians’ manager Antonio Conte wants the Belgian, 26, to be his main man up front.

But SunSport understands United will not budge on the £75m valuation.
