The Netherlands international has been long linked with a move to Old Trafford and it was claimed this summer that intermediaries were in contact with United regarding the right-back.

However, a deal did not materialise between the clubs. United decided to sign Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich despite having the opportunity to land Dumfries from the Nerazzurri.

United paid a fee in the region of £13m for the Moroccan ace. On the contrary, the Nerazzurri were eyeing close to £25m for Dumfries which seemed beyond the reach of United.

Dumfries was also on the radar of Aston Villa , but he reportedly turned down their interest. He was waiting for the Red Devils instead, but an offer never came during the transfer window .

The Dutchman is now expected to put pen-to-paper on a new long-term contract with the Serie A holders. His current deal is due to expire at the end of the season.
