Manchester United FC news: Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho's fiery relationship revealed

Paul Pogba’s relationship with Jose Mourinho hit rock bottom after a fiery half time exchange during the Manchester derby.

While nobody in United’s side ended the first half with any credit, it was Pogba who was the focus of the manager’s ire as the Red Devils trailed 2-0 at the break, Neil Custis writes in The Sun.

And apparently, the boss' anger only increased when Pogba sat and muttered under his breath as Mourinho took him to task in front of team-mates for his performance.

Pogba, though, responded with two goals in the second-half to help fire United to a 3-2 win.

It prompted a delighted Mourinho to perform a massive u-turn at full-time in the changing room.

In front of all the players, he told Pogba he would have been his man of the match even without the two goals.

Pogba was left bemused by the whole affair, which has put further strain on the relationship between player and manager.

However, against rock bottom West Brom it was back to normal for Pogba when he was hauled off just short of the hour mark following another disappointing showing from the club record £89million signing.

Not only did United lose 1-0, but defeat also handed Man City the Premier League title.

France international Pogba has been substituted or omitted from the starting line-up in eight of the last 13 games.

The first cracks began to appear when he was taken off in a 2-0 defeat at Spurs on 31 January having failed to follow Mourinho’s touchline instructions.

Mourinho gave him a dressing down in showdown talks at their Carrington training ground two months ago in which the player complained the team did not like his tactics and he himself did not like where he was being played.

It prompted Mourinho to tell him to check what was written on the door as he left his manager’s office.

In other words he was the boss.

Mourinho was also unhappy with Pogba after the 2-1 victory against Liverpool at Old Trafford when the midfielder interrupted a TV interview the manager was doing, pulling him towards him after clasping his hand.

Before the derby, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola revealed Pogba’s agent had approached him asking if he wanted to buy the player in January.

And as SunSport revealed, Real Madrid, who lost out to United in the race for Pogba in 2016, still want him.

While Pogba and Mourinho are unhappy with one another the player himself certainly does not want to call time on his return to Old Trafford where he began his career.

He enjoys being back in Manchester and is determined to make a success of it while Mourinho wants to get the best out of the player.

Pogba was performing at a very high level for United up until his red card against Arsenal back on 2 December.

That was a major turning point for the player and the club.

He was suspended for the first derby of the season which, had United won, the gap at the top would only have been five points.

They lost 2-1, though, and it stretched to 11 and there was no going back after that.

The club hierarchy certainly do not want to see a player they worked so hard to buy from Juventus leaving again after just two seasons.
