Mads Bech Sørensen and Johan Hove both made their first starts for Groningen as Dennis van der Ree went looking for his first win in charge of the club. Groningen lined up in a 5-3-2 and wanted to keep it tight at the back, but they found themselves behind in the first five minutes.
A long ball by Andries Noppert was left by Thijmen Blokzijl and that allowed Amin Sarr to nip in and net the opener.
Groningen equalised just before the break as a shot from Ricardo Pepi was turned past Noppert by Florian Krüger.
Both teams made a strong start to the second half but it was Heerenveen who eventually found the lead with Pelle van Amersfoort heading in a corner after 81 minutes. Sarr then added the third for Heerenveen to seal the victory for the Frisians.
Heerenveen is 7th in the table, while Groningen is in 15th and only out of the relegation zone on goal difference.
