The Gunners have already finalised personal terms with the Spanish star and they are now working on a deal for his services.

The club are yet to make an approach to Sociedad, but it could happen soon amid Liverpool 's interest in Martin Zubimendi .

Arsenal 's hierarchy and Merino's entourage are afraid that the midfielder's move could be blocked if Zubimendi joins the Reds.

With this in mind, the Gunners are expected to make a firm offer in the coming days to secure a transfer agreement.

Atletico and Barcelona are also interested in Merino, but the 28-year-old has made it clear that he wants to join Arsenal .

Merino has personally spoken with manager Mikel Arteta and the Gunners boss has revealed his plans for his compatriot.

Arsenal are likely to pay around £21m for the ex- Newcastle man. Merino is said to be excited about returning to England.
