Enzo Maresca sends message to Reece James after Newcastle win
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has described Reece James as a top player after the club's 2-1 Premier League win against Newcastle United.
The Blues returned to winning ways in the top-flight with a victory over
Eddie Howe
's side.
Nicolas Jackson and
Cole Palmer were the goalscorers.
James' leadership came into question earlier this week, but Maresca is pleased with his overall contribution in the hard-fought win over the Magpies.
He said: "I really love and like Reece. I was saying the other day, I expected more from the captains, from Reece and the other guys. Inside the pitch, he is a top player."
James has been handled with caution due to his persistent hamstring issues and he is likely to be rested for the midweek League Cup tie against Newcastle on the road.
The Carabao Cup is probably the Blues' best chance for a trophy this campaign, but Maresca is expected to ring in the changes with several reserves likely to start.
Chelsea have a key Premier League encounter at Manchester United on Sunday and this could urge the manager to change his entire 11 for the trip to St James' Park.
