Man Utd wanted to sign French star before Andre Onana
Manchester United attempted to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan before turning to Andre Onana this summer.
United manager Erik ten Hag made the decision to sign a new goalkeeper after the FA Cup final where David de Gea was poor.
Maignan was initially the top target for the Red Devils, but they cooled their interest after the staggering price tag set by AC Milan.
The Rossoneri set a high asking price of €100 million for the shot-stopper soon after selling Sandro Tonali to Newcastle for €70m.
This put off United from making an approach.
They turned their attention to Onana, who was signed for an initial fee of around €50m.
Onana did not feature in the recent friendly win over Arsenal , but he should play some part against Real Madrid in the upcoming game.
The Cameroonian is one of the best ball-playing goalkeepers in the world and should boost United's chances of challenging for the title.
