Merino has been linked with Barcelona in recent months, but reports claim that Arsenal could be in the driving seat to land his signature.

Arteta has reportedly discussed the club's project with the 28-year-old and he has seduced his compatriot into making the move this summer.

Sociedad are prepared to part ways with him for €25m. The fee should be easily affordable for the Gunners which is not the case for Barcelona.

Barcelona are only allowed to spend 25 percent of any fee recouped due to their Financial Fair Play restrictions with La Liga.

As a result, they can't enter a bidding battle with the Gunners. Merino would definitely be a surprise signing for the London giants.
