After less than four months in charge of the Amsterdam club, Steijn has been sacked with the club sitting in 17th spot in the Eredivisie.

Speaking to the club website, Steijn reacted to the departure, “This morning I had a meeting with the management and we met again at the end of the afternoon. We came to the conclusion that this is now the best thing for Ajax, although I think it is a great shame. I would like to thank the supporters and the people I have worked with here and I hope that Ajax will soon take the upward path.”

Hedwiges Maduro will temporarily take charge of the club for their Europa League game with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Ajax and Maurice Steijn will part ways with immediate effect. The club management and Steijn have agreed that the coach will step down from his position.
