Martin Zubimendi rejects transfer to Liverpool
Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has turned down a move to Liverpool in the current transfer window, according to Relevo.
The Merseyside giants opened talks with Sociedad for the Spaniard last week and they showed willingness to pay his £52 million release clause in his contract.
However, the midfielder decided to delay his decision and he has now confirmed his desire to continue with the La Liga heavyweights.
Zubimendi has been persuaded to stay at San Sebastian. He has agreed to sign a new deal on lesser wages than what Liverpool had offered.
The decision is a huge blow for the Merseyside giants, who were aiming to bring in a defensive midfielder before the new campaign.
Wataru Endo is currently the regular choice for the role, but the Japan international has been inconsistent over the last 12 months.
New manager Arne Slot could request the club to pursue an alternative option in the transfer market over the next few days.
