The Gunners were heavily linked with the Sweden international last summer following his sensational debut season.

Gyokeres netted 43 goals and provided 15 assists for Sporting in all competitions, but no club made a serious offer.

Sporting were reluctant to sell him for less than his €100m release clause. It was a price which Arsenal refused to match.

This has not necessarily ended the Gunners' pursuit and the club could return him in the forthcoming transfer window s.

Arsenal are still keeping tabs on his performances and a deal could be possible if Sporting are prepared to negotiate.

The Gunners seem reluctant to pay more than €80m. They are prepared to settle the same package over multiple seasons.

Gyokeres has continued his bright form in the current campaign. He has netted 12 goals from as many games for Sporting.

The former Coventry City striker has also chipped in with four assists.
