Williams is aware of the long-standing interest from the La Liga giants, but United are optimistic of luring him to Old Trafford instead.

He has a low release clause of £48 million in his contract, but could demand a weekly wage package in the region of £300,000.

This is well within the affordability range of United. The club are likely to face competition from Arsenal , who are long-term admirers too.
