Groningen went into the game on the back of a shock cup exit to Spakenburg at the Euroborg in midweek. The home fans were hoping for an improved performance against the league leaders.
However, Arne Slot’s side were better from the start and they had the lead after 19 minutes with Mats Wieffer crossing for Igor Paixao to head in. Orkun Kokcu then doubled the lead before the break with a placed strike into the bottom corner.
Feyenoord had a number of chances to net a third but didn’t take them and Groningen grew into the game in the second half. Ricardo Pepi had a goal disallowed before he had an effort kept out by Justin Bijlow.
In the final minute, Santiago Giménez got in on goal and calmly slotted in a third to kill the game and seal the victory for Feyenoord, who are four points clear at the top. Next weekend they will host Ajax.
Groningen’s struggles continue and they are 15th and only one point above an automatic relegation spot.
