Despite strong links with Chelsea, Noni Madueke remained in the PSV line-up and Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side began on top in Limburg.
Luuk de Jong and Anwar El Ghazi both got big chances but they were denied by goalkeeper Ivor Pandur. Just before the break, Fortuna Sittard stunned the visitors as Iñigo Córdoba made it 1-0 on the rebound.
In the 56th minute, Dogan Erdogan hit De Jong on the knee and was shown a straight red card. PSV then netted the equaliser nine minutes later as Xavi Simons was left free to head in a cross at the far post.
De Jong missed a good chance to score before Ibrahim Sangare tapped in on the goalline to put PSV in front and it seemed from there the three points were in the bag.
However, PSV failed to kill the game and in stoppage time, Guus Til committed a foul on Paul Gladon, Burak Yilmaz made no mistake with the penalty to earn his side a point.
PSV fail to go second and they are fourth, while Fortuna Sittard is 15th.
